Our History
The Chestnuts Friends Over Fifty, originally conceived in 2016 by Beacon Hill and Back Bay residents Martha McAllister and Pat Carucci, was designed as a way for women in our community to connect with others with common interests. It filled a need, and the Chestnut group grew very quickly. In 2022 the group incorporated into a nonprofit 501c7 women’s friendship group, Chestnuts Friends Over Fifty (CFOF). Our members live in Beacon Hill, Back Bay as well as other neighborhoods in Boston.
The Chestnut Group is on Instagram! Check out our handle @Chestnutgroupboston.

What We Do
Each month the CFOF calendar offers events suitable for a wide variety of interests. All of these events are initiated and run by members. Some events are an optional “plus one,” which means that members can bring along a family member or friend. We operate September through May and then break for the summer months. Our events are listed on our monthly calendar about two weeks before the end of the upcoming month. An email is then sent to members letting them know the calendar has been updated for the new month ahead. Members can go to the calendar, click on an event, obtain more information, and register for whatever event(s) that they would like to attend. Below are our usual events.
Afternoon Book Group
Afternoon book group meets once a month in the afternoon with meeting places changing monthly.
Community Coffees
Once or twice a month, Chestnuts meet out at local Coffee Shops. Everyone buys their own coffee or tea and the Chestnuts provide the pastries. This activity is organized by different members at different neighborhood coffee shops. It mostly takes place in the mornings but sometimes in the afternoons as well.
Documentary Film Group
Each month interested members will screen a carefully selected documentary on their own and then come together to engage in a thoughtful discussion about that documentary.
Evening Book Group
Evening Book Group meets once a month in the evening and the meet up place changes monthly.
Film Group
Film group meets for a movie out at the theater. Going to the movie is often paired with a casual film discussion and beverages or food.
Fun & Games
Chestnut’s Fun & Games gets people together to learn and to play various games, either at a general games night affair, or for games such as canasta and bridge.
Lunch Bunch
At Lunch Bunch Chestnuts see their old friends and make new ones as we venture to great restaurants around the city.
Meals Out
Another time for great food and great conversation! A Chestnut or two finds a local restaurant and makes a group reservation for brunch, lunch or dinner. and we invite the group!
Mix & Mingle
Chestnuts Mix & Mingle over a beverage one late afternoon per month with the venue always changing.
New Member Events
Each year our new members are welcomed with several events geared just to them and their successful integration into our group.
Party with a Purpose
Party with a Purpose is a larger group house party hosted by a Chestnut and is philanthropic in nature. The parties generally occur about five times a year. We have great food and drinks and make contributions to one of our local charities.
Seasoned Cooks
Seasoned Cooks meets monthly, and members prepare and bring to the gathering a recipe that centers around the chosen theme for that month.
Small Spots
For Small Spots members gather in a small group setting of 4 to 12, usually for great beverages and greater conversations.
Special Events
Special Events occur at least monthly and involve getting out to a museum, taking a tour, attending a theatrical, sports event or a concert, etc. There’s often a get-together for a meal or coffee/beverages before or after the event.
Theater Group
This group focuses on gathering Chestnut women together to attend some of our local theatrical productions. Women attend productions at The Emerson Theater, The Lyric Stage and other nearby theaters. Theater is paired with brunch, dinner or drinks.
Travel Group
Travel Group meets every other month. The group discusses travel to various destinations around the world. There is usually a designated leader for the particular country discussed and many Chestnuts contribute. This group meets on the last Thursday evening of the month.
Walking Group
Chestnuts enjoy getting together for Walking Group on some mornings. Members add their names to the Walking Group email list and look for emails from leaders.
Wine Tastings
Wine Tastings happen several times a year and are a great way to become educated about wines and to socialize with Chestnut friends and their plus ones.
